Dry, Damp, and Wet Ratings

Long Made Co. makes fixtures for Dry and Damp locations, we do not make Wet location fixtures at this time. Below you will find a more detailed explanation on the differences between Dry, Damp, and Wet ratings.

Dry location, damp-rated, and wet-rated light fixtures are designed for different levels of moisture exposure.

  • Dry-rated fixtures are for indoor, water-free areas like bedrooms and living rooms.
  • Damp-rated fixtures are for indoor and covered outdoor spaces with humidity or indirect water exposure like bathrooms (not in showers) and covered patios.
  • Wet-rated fixtures are completely sealed to withstand direct water contact, making them suitable for open outdoor areas such as decks, pergolas, and unroofed patios.

At this time, Long Made Co DOES NOT make any wet-rated fixtures. The majority of our fixtures are appropriate for dry or damp locations only. Please check our website product listings for the specific location recommendations.

Always install fixtures with a rating that matches the environment to avoid electrical hazards and ensure durability! A damp-rated fixture can be used in a dry location, but a dry-rated fixture should never be used in a damp or wet location. Further, a damp-rated fixture should never be used in a wet location.

Dry Location Fixtures

Definition: These are for interior areas where there is no moisture or water exposure.
Examples: Living rooms, bedrooms, offices, and other finished indoor spaces.
Limitations: They are not protected against condensation, and cannot be used in damp or wet areas.

Damp-Rated Fixtures

Definition: These fixtures can handle indirect moisture exposure, such as condensation or steam, but not direct water contact.
Examples: Bathrooms (away from the immediate shower), covered patios, and utility rooms.
Limitations: While they are suitable for humid environments, they cannot withstand direct rain, snow, or splashes of water.

Wet-Rated Fixtures (We do not make any Wet-Rated fixtures)

Definition: These fixtures are designed to withstand direct exposure to water.
Examples: Open decks, gazebos, areas exposed to rain and snow, outdoor pathways, and near water features like fountains or pools.
Features: They are fully sealed to prevent water from entering the electrical components.

How to Choose the Right Fixture

1. Work with your contractor and licensed electrician to identify the location: Determine if the area is dry, intermittently damp, or directly exposed to water.

2. Check our rating on the website's listing page for that product and verify it will be appropriate for the location.

3. Ensure Safety: Always install fixtures with a rating that matches the environment to avoid serious electrical hazards and ensure safety and durability.
